Wheaton financial analyst Dee Fors is losing her hair to chemotherapy, but you wouldn?t know it by looking at her.

She was the first client of the new American Cancer Society Wig Boutique in Naperville, where she and other cancer patients can get wigs at no cost. She picked a short style with blonde highlights.

?As a matter of fact, my husband tells me I look 10 years younger,? said Fors, who just turned 66.

Before visiting the wig boutique, Fors tried winter hats, fashion hats and scarves, but she thought seeing her reflection in the mirror was
?like looking at death itself.? Plus, she got cold.

A hospital staff member referred her to the wig boutique, which gives private, appointment-only consultations on the third floor of a DuPage Medical Group building on Ogden Avenue. It?s the cancer society?s fourth wig boutique in DuPage County.

The boutique stocks synthetic
wigs purchased by the society or donated from manufacturers such
as Sophia Loren and Pantene. Women?s styles always are there, but the boutique can order men?s and children?s wigs, too.

Fors wasn?t sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised.

?It?s a humiliating thing, losing your hair,? she said. ?With a wig, you don?t feel so doomed.?

While some patients come in with a sense of humor and say, ?Make me a redhead,? others just want their former looks back, said Joy Rosenberg, health initiatives director for the DuPage Region American Cancer Society. The boutique is ready to handle a range of emotions. Many of the boutique?s volunteers are cancer survivors who have been trained in wig fitting.

?Our volunteers aren?t psychologists, but they?re survivors, and they understand,? Rosenberg said.

Each cancer patient can get one wig for free, regardless of income or insurance. Wigs sold at retail prices start around $100; long human-hair wigs can cost $500. Patients only need to fill out one form, mostly for demographic purposes.

Fors is grateful she?s received such support from the American Cancer Society.

?I always feel if you look good on the outside, you feel better on the inside,? she said. ?And you don?t want to look like you have cancer.?

Know how to effectively do away with your own incorrect sexy eyeslash.
